Ten at Tenth

Last month, Christy Corbert completed her tenth year of serving on the Tenth Church staff. She started off as church receptionist, then took on the duties of Financial Assistant, and now holds three positions - Parish and Membership Coordinator, Music Administrative Assistant, and IT Coordinator. (She just jump-started the church's server to get the internet connection working again.) Christy sings in the choir (you may have heard her sing solo in Soli Deo Gloria), and teaches Praisemakers. Probably most people in the church have had contact with Christy in some way for some reason.

As you can tell, Christy has lots of spare time. She is an avid sports fan, ready to talk Phillies, Eagles, and especially the Flyers. (Flyers tickets anyone?) Or, if you really want to get on her good side, talk NASCAR racing.

We thank the Lord for ALL that Christy does for the church and her support to the staff. Hmm...now why is my computer acting slow? Better go find Christy...

Wait, didn't we commission them to go to Africa?

Several months ago we commissioned John and Jessica Cropsey to join a medical team in Africa. They leave for the field on October 5.

So what is John doing in South Asia? Check out their blog here to learn all about it.

Blue, 1-disc CD player, AM/FM radio, front and side airbags (we bought this model for the side airbags).

We have not had any problems with the car, but need more space with baby #3 on the way. We've enjoyed the roominess of the backseat and cargo area -- room for stuff between car seats and under the kids' feet when we travel.

Grace Church

Grace Church of Philly is a new church plant work in the Powelton Village area behind Drexel University. They are having a Launch Team Picnic at Drexel Park (32nd and Baring) on Saturday Sept 19 from 4-7 PM. Anyone interested in a church plant in Powelton Village is welcome. The rain date is Sept 20, same time and place.

An independent work, the leaders are Reformed. You can check out their website at www.gracechurchphilly.org. The organizing pastor, John Davis, dropped in for a visit yesterday. I was a bit suspicious (rides a Harley-Davidson), but learned that he is the father of Deborah Rojas whom some of you may remember as a Tenth member and wife of Richard Rojas.

The Maranatha Family Dinner Sunday, September 20

The Maranatha Family Dinner meets this Sunday at 5pm in Fellowship Hall. Bring the whole family for fellowship, videos of kick-off activities, information about the upcoming year of youth ministry at Tenth, and a chance to honor Carroll for all his years of service.

Pomp and Circumstance?

Well, probably not.

But I'll bet that there were rich harmonies, complex rhythms, and lots of clapping at the graduation ceremony for African Enterprise's rehabilitation and training program in Ghana. Each of the women once sold her body in order to feed herself and her family. Now they have skills in a local trade and a small amount of capital to start a new life.

And they now have a personal relationship with Jesus, who is transforming their lives.

And they now have a larger, more diverse family than they could imagine who can pray for them as they begin a new chapter.

But they still have friends trapped in prostitution. A.E. would like to begin another training session immediately but is short $5,500. Would you join them in praying for funding?

WOW for W.O.W.!

Or W.O.W. says, "WOW!"

In either case, our Wide Open World children demonstrated their love for children in Liberia in a BIG way! Our eager youngsters read books, tried ethnic foods, hosted global partners, learned songs in other languages, and colored lots and lots of flags in order to earn stamps in their passports.

The math is very simple. 1 passport stamp = $1.

So, 900 passport stamps = $900!

WOW!

As one of my little friends commented, "I hope this makes the kids in Liberia very happy."

Philadelphia Distance Run, September 20

A Method for Prayer

Marion,

I would encourage you to visit the Matthew Henry website as something to introduce to your web audience. We might also want a link from the church blog/webpage.

Phil

Matthew Henry (1662-1714) is best known for his verse by verse commentary on the whole Bible. Dr. Old tells me that the commentary is a compilation of the teachings he gave from the pulpit similar to what we do with our weekly Scripture Reading. He is also known for a book he wrote entitled A Method for Prayer. This website that Phil is referring to presents the full book. Check it out.

A Cardinal (Gasp!) Nice Guy

As troublesome it is to have a senior minister dedicated to celebrating all things Cardinal related, even I was moved by this episode involving Albert Pujols.

S. Philly Official

Last week the Philadelphia Presbytery met. I don't have a report on the meeting, though I did learn that presbytery approved the South Philly work as an official presbytery church plant. Jonathan had about 35 attendees at the first Bible school class yesterday dedicated to discussing the work.

Back from Vacation

I am back from vacation. Have whittled email down to 208. Ginger and I had a pleasant visit with her parents in Cape Cod (Cotuit). Sarah joined us for a few days. The only down-side was my daughter beating me in ping-pong. First Josh, now Sarah. Have I passed my prime?

"When Helping Hurts" Webinar

Former Global Outreach Coordinator Christiana Fitzpatrick sent a notice of a "webinar" (online based seminar) series coming up, put on by The Chalmers Center of Covenant College. Here is a description of the series from the website:

"We would like to invite you to join us for a series of live, one-hour webinars (web-based seminars) that address topics in the new book, “When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor…and Yourself.” These webinars are led by the book's co-authors — Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert of the Chalmers Center for Economic Development."

The seminars are free. For more information and to register, click here.
